I have spent hours in this cold bed Ruminating

Going over each conversation

Editing Reining in raised voices Rearranging fragments Into an easier narrative “Can we talk like grown ups?”

We are kinder More patient with each other In my version of events

Rose scent caught me off guard today For a second you were back Almost broke my neck turning round To see somebody else

I have hunched like Caliban over lonely tables In low-lit bars Glazed eyes Watching friends, families, lovers I am a gargoyle in my corner Their business is not mine And my business they would not want a part of I am the crack in the wall

An apparition I was never even here In my version of events
